No Sex In The Persian City

For more than a century, Jews and non-Jews alike have tried to define the relatedness of contemporary Jewish people. Previous genetic studies of blood group and serum markers suggested that Jewish groups had Middle Eastern origin with greater genetic similarity between paired Jewish populations. However, these and successor studies of monoallelic Y chromosomal and mitochondrial genetic markers did not resolve the issues of within and between-group Jewish genetic identity. Here, genome-wide analysis of seven Jewish groups Iranian, Iraqi, Syrian, Italian, Turkish, Greek, and Ashkenazi and comparison with non-Jewish groups demonstrated distinctive Jewish population clusters, each with shared Middle Eastern ancestry, proximity to contemporary Middle Eastern populations, and variable degrees of European and North African admixture. The IBD segment sharing and the proximity of European Jews to each other and to southern European populations suggested similar origins for European Jewry and refuted large-scale genetic contributions of Central and Eastern European and Slavic populations to the formation of Ashkenazi Jewry. Rapid decay of IBD in Ashkenazi Jewish genomes was consistent with a severe bottleneck followed by large expansion, such as occurred with the so-called demographic miracle of population expansion from 50, people at the beginning of the 15 th century to 5,, people at the beginning of the 19 th century. Jews originated as a national and religious group in the Middle East during the second millennium BCE 1 and have maintained continuous genetic, cultural, and religious traditions since that time, despite a series of Diasporas. Earlier genetic studies on blood groups and serum markers suggested that Jewish Diaspora populations had Middle Eastern origin, with greater genetic similarity between paired Jewish populations than with non-Jewish populations. Recent studies of Y chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA haplotypes have pointed to founder effects of both Middle Eastern and local origin, yet the issue of how to characterize Jewish people as mere coreligionists or as genetic isolates that may be closely or loosely related remains unresolved. Participants were recruited from the Turkish Sephardic Jewish community in Seattle, from the Greek Sephardic Jewish communities in Thessaloniki and Athens, and from the Italian Jewish community in Rome, the latter as previously described.

Persian Jews are coming out of the closet and breaking down long-held taboos in their community

I am embarrassed to admit it, but when I met my husband I had no idea there were ever any Jews in Iran. I really thought he was joking. I really thought that even if there had been Jews in Iran, they would be gone, just like the Persian Empire was gone too. I thought that just like Persepolis lay in ruins, any trace of the descendants of Queen Esther and her people were laid in ruins.

However, now I know that what would seem a logical course of history for other nations is simply not applicable to Jews.

Cynthia Shamash founded Eldelala, a dating site for Mizrahi Jews.

Current members trace their family histories to countries including Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Morocco. On Eldelala, users answer a questionnaire about themselves regarding topics such as religious observance, willingness to relocate and what they are looking for in a partner. Matches are made the old-fashioned way — by Shamash and two other matchmakers, who read the profiles and introduce members whom they think are compatible.

She signed up for Eldelala in May because she prefers to date someone who shares her Mizrahi background, she said, noting common food, music and mentalities. Arazi has already received two suggested matches from Shamash. She declined to meet the first match after realizing that he was much more observant than she was, but she is hoping to meet a second possible suitor soon. Out of the handful of matches Eldelala has initiated since April, one is still in touch, according to Shamash. Arazi tried other dating platforms without success, she said.

Indeed, this crisis has led the regime to engage in fantastical, outrageous conspiracy theories about the current pandemic that are deeply infused with antisemitism, including classic tropes. These include claiming the disease is an attack on Iran by using genies and magic, that COVID is part of an external biological attack on Iran by the U.

The intelligence services of many countries cooperate with one another against us. The Supreme Leader did not explicitly identify Jews or Israel in this regard, but his own office soon clarified this point. However, most of these conspiracy theories imagine the United States leading such a biological attack, either with the help of Jewish capitalists or Israel , or to benefit Israel or at the behest of Jewish puppet masters.

Two years ago, Seth Menachem told Off-Ramp and Huffington Post readers about his young son Asher’s desire to wear female clothes, and his acceptance of it. It was a long and heartfelt piece that was very popular. But for Chaya Leah Esakhan , a young first generation Persian-Jewish-American, it wasn’t this serious piece that changed her life, but Seth’s lighthearted dating column in the Jewish Journal.

My parents came to L. They always made sure my siblings and I had everything we needed and wanted — toys, games, our favorite treats and, since I loved art, my parents made sure I went to art class every week. The little English they spoke had a strong fresh-off-the-boat accent, which the class clowns could impeccably impersonate. Their skits baffled me, because my parents were my rock and I was their precious princess.

And so, I distanced myself from my inherited culture and I stopped speaking Farsi. I dared not voice my desire for a secular education. I already felt guilty enough for their sacrifices. But when I received the welcome packet, I cried. The rules forbade any dress and behavior that could be construed as seductive — even bicycling. It was obvious: We girls were mere baby-making machines. Every two years or so a genetic company would come to our school to collect our DNA for matchmaking purposes.
